“Mobile phone vs. Large screen HDTV”
Transmission speed of mobile phone will become 200Mbps by super 3G in 2010,
which is good enough to transmit moving pictures for large screen high
definition TV.
NTT DoCoMo demonstrated their experimental broadcasting test result at
CEATEC(the biggest exhibition for communication in Japan) held in October
2007.
They transmitted
moving pictures for 12 TV of 32 inch high definition at the same time, using
15Mbps transmission speed for each TV, in total 180Mbps.
If the mobile phone is
connected with the TV monitor as a wireless receiving terminal of TV, TV
monitor works as HDTV. More than 64inch large screen HDTV is visible if all
data carried by 200Mbps is used for one HDTV.
There are many methods
to transmit moving picture data from mobile phone to TV monitor, by wire or by
wireless. Present infrared data transmission like method can be used as
wireless transmission. Present mobile phone battery charger can be used by
connecting one more wire from mobile phone to TV. Card type wireless receiving
terminal could be used just like it is used for PC.
As moving picture data for TV and for mobile phone are transmitted by traffic
channel in one way, two systems may look like the same. However, these
two systems are completely different.
Mobile phone system’s control channel communicates both ways and transmits
user activity data such as, when they watched, where they watched, what
program they watched etc. to their sponsors through the mobile phone company.
In addition to these valuable data acquisition, the mobile phone company
can charge separately for basic channel and for premium channel.
On the other hand, present
TV system needs the set-top box connected to telephone line in order to
communicate interactive. Such system was developed more than 20 years ago, but
it did not get users support because of troublesome telephone line connection.
TV connected with the
internet is interactive system and becomes popular in these days. However,
available data is only from the server and not directly from users. User
activities data are lump some and each individual user data is not available.
If we suppose 15MHz is required for transmission of 15Mbps by 3G CDMA, required
band will become 0.15MHz for super 3G(3.9G) in 2010 since transmission speed
will be increase by 100times.
Transmission cost of
mobile phone system shall be drastically decreased by the advancement of the
data transmission technology, while transmission speed of terrestrial TV system
remains the same in 2010.
Many companies will
study to enter into TV broadcasting business by mobile phone as MVNO. Their
cost could be less than that of present TV companies because of mobile phone’s
technical advancement.
There is no reason to
stop mobile phone companies’ entrance into TV broadcasting business since various
new type broadcasting companies entered into TV broadcasting business by cable
and by satellite after terrestrial TV.
Because of
diversifications of the means of communication will be done also in the future,
contents supplier becomes more important than communication companies.
